A reflection exercise for separating observation, psychological concept, symbolic interpretation, and personal response.

10–15 min
Steps
01

Observation

Notice: What is directly described or observed?

Try: Write one statement as literally as possible, without metaphor or explanation.

02

Concept

Notice: Which psychological idea is being used?

Try: Name the framework and ask what it explains well and what it leaves out.

03

Symbol

Notice: Where does the symbolic or archetypal reading begin?

Try: Phrase it as a possibility: ‘this image could be read as…’.

04

Personal response

Notice: What did this evoke in you?

Try: Describe your reaction in the first person without turning it into a universal conclusion.
